the center cannot hold when the people realize that the government evaporated. All the powdered wigs and the gavels and the scepters in the world mean nothing then.
It's like if the dog catcher comes up to you on the street and says, "Let me search your bags," and you say, "Why should I? You're the dog catcher," and he says, "No I'm not. I'm the bag searcher," and you say, "But you are not a bag searcher. You have no authority to search my bag. Now get lost before I cane your backside and kick you into the gutter where you belong."
When it becomes clear to the man on the street that a government has no authority to command, that government disappears. No government can stand against any population who may reluctantly agree that the government does not exist. Governments are thought structures. They possess sensible Ford Focuses and fax machines and guns, but are not themselves sensible Ford Focuses and fax machines and guns. The existence of those things does not imply the existence of government. As a matter of fact, those things are considered abandoned property and may be claimed by whatever political structure may put them to some higher moral use.
Governments are thought structures. They exist inside people's minds only.
Thought structures can be destroyed by contradictory and incompatible information. For example, a body politic by definition does not murder its own members. An entity which does murder its members is not, by definition, a body politic and its edicts may be ignored. In Western tradition, governments are the repository of the sublimated war-making powers of the individual members of the body politic. Obviously, one does not kill oneself. Obviously, a government does not murder its own citizens. It doesn't make sense. The contradiction causes the thought structure to wink out of existence, like some kind of matter/anti-matter collision.
This is what made the United States disappear:
The United States was destroyed by information, not by guns. And this is why the pen is mightier than the sword.
Not a single person in my audience would argue with a straight face that the United States exists, nor that any successor political structure of it would ever possess any of its delegated authority. A thing that doesn't exist can't delegate anything.
I publicly destroyed the United States prior to its being able to deliver its authority to any supranational political structure like the UN or the North American Union.
...and that is why I created USov.
I was here first. And your own children will thank me for my efforts.
I am a sovereign being, subject to the rule of no man. My person and property are outside the reach of any other jurisdiction. No law of the United States or of the several states touches any present or future member of United Sovereigns of America, save those laws to which USov may elect to provide an accession to jurisdiction, which accession is made solely in the interest of promoting social order and harmonious interoperation among jurisdictions.
It's over.
